I wanted to fill in the gap for patients who don’t have access to quality dentistry, this may be because they live in a remote area, struggle with mobility or have fears. After thinking about the concept for many years I decided to throw myself into my own business, I spoke to a number of professionals that help with start-up businesses and next minute I was launching.
My mobile business started to provide better access to dental care from the comfort of patients’ homes, aged care facilities, child care centres and even corporate offices.
I love being able to provide a portable service to those at aged care facilities where residents have restricted movement, they can stay in their bed or their favourite chair, encouraging and educating healthy dental care habits to the carers and the children at child care centres, or allowing parents to be able to cook dinner while all the family members in the household get a dental check-up and hygiene visit. Some children are also eligible for the Medicare Child Dental Benefit Scheme which means our services can be provided at no cost to the families.
Your teeth are important and linked directly to your mouth and whole body. Small problems in your mouth are asymptomatic which is why regular check-ups are so important, it’s not as scary as you remember.
In just 10 months I have accrued enough business to take on a casual employee, and so far based in Sydney running from my home NSW wide. My dream is to expand and have a number of mobile vehicles and dentists working as part of our team.
The satisfaction of knowing I can succeed at my own business and being able to provide a service that may not have been used otherwise, keeps me going. I have worked in the dental industry since finishing school and is the most rewarding job I could ever ask for.
I am lucky to have found something I love doing and get paid to do it. I also love to travel, I love jumping on a plane and want to go everywhere on the planet.
“It always seems impossible until it’s done”, by Nelson Mandela, would have to be my favourite quote.
I feared going into a business that I didn’t know enough about running a business. There were so many concepts, so many things I didn’t know how to do or that I needed to do when running my own business. I overcame this fear by investing time, researching and speaking to other business owners and recommend investing the time to do just that. If you are taking that step, don’t be shy, ask, ask and ask some more questions.
I even have a french bulldog with an underbite, she has the silliest face I have ever seen, she’s very cheeky and likes my husband better than me but at least she lets me clean her teeth.
